Teaching your autistic child how to read can be quite a challenging task. One way to make this task a bit easier for you and your child is to make use of picture cue cards. Picture cue cards contain both an image and a word. As most autistic children are very visual in nature, having the combination of both word and image in the picture cue helps a lot to assist him in visualizing what the word is.

To effectively do this, it is recommended that you plan your lessons in such a way that you are teaching your child words from the same category at a time. For your first lesson, choose a category that you think your child will be most interested in. For example, if your child is interested in colors, you can start to teach him words such as red, blue, yellow, etc. Doing this will make it easier for him to learn as the human mind tends to categorize things.

Always start your lesson by explaining to your child what the activity is about. Doing this will make him aware of what to expect and what is expected of him. Clarify any questions he may have and make sure that he understands what is required of him.

When he is ready, pick up a picture cue card, show it to him and then say the word. Give him a couple of seconds to digest what is on the picture cue card. This time delay will allow him to associate the word with the image. When he is ready, spell the word so that he will learn to associate the sequence of the letters to both the image and the word.

Keep in mind that learning comes easier with repetition. Repeat reading and spelling the word at least two times per session. Be patient and take the time to go through the picture cue cards with your child as often as you can.
